10% of credit crunched Brits 'struggling to pay mortgage'

10% of credit crunched Brits 'struggling to pay mortgage'

- Wednesday, 22 April 2009

A total of ten per cent of Brits who admit they are struggling with their finances amid the credit crunch are having trouble making payments on their mortgage, according to research conducted for Fairinvestment.co.uk.

Sharon Bratley, a chartered financial planner at the firm, suggested that today's (April 22nd) Budget may further add to these people's problems.

"Public debt and spending has spiralled out of control, and the only feasible way to end this is to increase taxes in some way," she said.

Ms Bratley added that measures which are expected to be announced to relieve some of the financial burden - including an extension of the stamp duty holiday - are not likely to have an impact beyond the short-term.

The UK's interest repayments on personal debt totalled £72 billion over the past 23 months, with each household paying an average of £3,000 in interest each year, according to figures from a debt charity.

Credit action reported that in February, the UK's personal debt rose by £1 million every 31 minutes.ADNFCR-2300-ID-19133032-ADNFCR
