2m children in poverty highlights need for debt help

- Friday, 4 December 2009

There are now more children living with poverty-stricken parents than ever before, it has been revealed.

According to research from the New Policy Institute and Joseph Rowntree Foundation, there are now 2.1 million children who live in low income households where at least one adult works.

The number of children living in poverty could highlight the need for more Brits to consider seeking debt advice and attempt to lift themselves and their child from financial destitution.

John Dickie, acting chief executive at Child Poverty Action Group, said that one of the key ways in which the government could help tackle child poverty was to reassess the benefits system.

He commented: "If the government is to even come close to its target of halving child poverty by 2010 then Alistair Darling must use the pre-budget report to boost benefits and tax credits for families in and out of work."

Mr Dickie went on to say that other factors such as childcare, school meal costs and wages could also be used to reduce UK poverty levels. .
