£3.8bn debt management burden due to child support

£3.8bn debt management burden due to child support

- Tuesday, 12 May 2009

The UK debt management burden relating to unpaid child support stands at £3.8 billion, reports the Guardian.

Figures published by the news provider place the £3.8 billion figure on the outstanding debt management burden shared by more than 50,000 men nationwide.

Despite bringing in private debt collectors to help retrieve the amount owed, the Child Support Agency has failed to regain 94 per cent of the outstanding balance.

This means the total UK debt management burden due to child support is equivalent to £30,000 per person, the Guardian adds.

Janet Allbeson, policy consultant for single-parent-families charity Gingerbread, tells the publication: "It would be preferable to come clean and say, 'This particular debt is not collectible any more.'

"It would put a lot of lone parents with care out of their misery."

But the Child Maintenance and Enforcement Commission, which is now responsible for chasing the debts, says it cannot do so without the permission of the relevant parent.

The Commission adds that new rules for maintenance payments aim to ensure that individuals' benefits are not adversely affected - and that the money reaches its intended destination.ADNFCR-2300-ID-19164609-ADNFCR
