Anonymous debt advice becoming more popular

Anonymous debt advice becoming more popular

- Monday, 10 May 2010

Anonymity encourages people to seek advice for their debt problems, claims a debt charity.

Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) revealed that the growth in popularity of online debt counselling is due to the anonymity it gives to those seeking advice.

Consumers can complete a full debt counselling session without having to identify themselves, a factor which may have put them off seeking debt help over the phone or in person.

Paula Searle, head of E-Services at CCCS, said: "Debt is an emotive issue and can lead to feelings of shame and embarrassment which often hinder people from seeking help. That is why it is so important to provide online counselling as it can help people in these situations deal with their debt problem sooner rather than later."

The online tool, established by the charity, which gives people debt help, had 86,444 unique users in the first three months of 2010.

This is over half the total users for the whole of 2009 when 152,872 used it to help with their financial issues.

Telephone calls to the charity's helpline have also increased in the first quarter of 2010 which suggests that borrowers need access to free impartial advice.ADNFCR-2300-ID-19766866-ADNFCR
