Avoid debt problems by knowing shopping rights

Avoid debt problems by knowing shopping rights

- Thursday, 1 July 2010

Consumers need to know their rights when it comes to shopping in the summer sales to avoid being stung by retailers and getting into debt problems.

Clothes bought in a sale can be returned if they are faulty or poor quality and consumers should not be scared to ask for a refund, advises Consumer Focus.

The firm states that the same rights apply in regards to a refund or replacement during the sales but urges shoppers to check the returns policy of the store before they buy in order to avoid being stuck with an item that is not satisfactory.

Adam Scorer, director of external affairs at Consumer Focus, said: "It is important people know their consumer rights in case their shopping turns out to be more fool's gold than 24 carat.

"By protecting ourselves with our rights, we can all make sure we don't get burned in the heat of the summer sales."

Buying items on impulse could cause debt problems if credit or store cards are used as interest rates can be high.

On June 22nd, chancellor George Osborne announced that VAT would increase to 20 per cent in January.ADNFCR-2300-ID-19868422-ADNFCR
