Avoid debt problems by not signing up to salesmen

Avoid debt problems by not signing up to salesmen

- Thursday, 10 June 2010

Falling for a door-to-door energy salesman's prices could increase bills by as much as £180, warns confused.com.

Inflated bills could lead to debt problems as households will have less spare cash to pay off any money they may owe.

Confused.com states that the elderly and vulnerable are more likely to be at risk of falling for over-expensive energy deals and are less likely to search for energy providers online.

Gareth Kloet, head of utilities at Confused.com, said: "It is unacceptable if energy companies are misleading customers like this. We are urging them to stop this practice or make it very clear to households that better deals are available online.

"There is no reason why door-to-door salesmen can't show people online deals and even help households switch to them."

He added that consumers could miss out on the best deals as salesmen will only talk about the company they work for and many tariffs require online sign-up.

Furthermore, debt problems may become easier to handle if energy bills decrease.

According to uSwitch.com, energy providers are enjoying increased profits, which may lead to a cut in prices.
