Avoid debt problems by protecting valuables at festivals

Avoid debt problems by protecting valuables at festivals

- Monday, 14 June 2010

Festival-goers should look after their possessions to avoid becoming a victim of crime, which may cause debt problems.

Replacing stolen items can be expensive and cause a consumer to fall into financial difficulty.

According to Aviva, crime at Glastonbury was down in 2008 but at least 450 crimes occurred over the three-day event, which included pick pocketing and thefts from tents.

Furthermore, festival-goers are still at risk of having personal items stolen even from their tents such as binoculars, sleeping equipment and mobile phones.

These objects can amount to as much as £1,000 per person.

Rob Townend, director of property at Aviva, said: "People on mass in packed crowds are a prime target for light-fingered thieves who will capitalise on opportunism during the fun.

"So think about basic security measures to ensure you're not advertising yourself as an easy target."

Consumers should separate cash from cards, use the free lock-up areas provided by the organisers, wear cheaper costume jewellery and keep valuables with them at all times to avoid becoming a victim of crime.

Glastonbury takes place from June 24th until 27th in Somerset.
