Avoid getting into debt problems this Christmas by shopping early

Avoid getting into debt problems this Christmas by shopping early

- Thursday, 21 October 2010

Consumers could avoid getting into debt problems this Christmas by starting to do their shopping now.

According to Simon James, shopping expert at moneysupermarket.com, it is a great idea to start looking for and buying Christmas products as early as possible from a financial point of view.

He said: "It's a great idea especially if the items you are looking to buy are going to be popular.

"By making sure you track down this years 'must have' item early it means you can still shop around and get the best bargains, if you leave it too late you're going to face higher prices as stock becomes limited."

Mr James added that bargains can exist nearer the festive day but consumers should not rely on that. He also suggested keeping receipts in case a cheaper version becomes available.

This could be especially important as food prices seem to be increasing. According to thisismoney.co.uk, a 1kg tub of Quality Street can now be purchased for £10 but in the past two Decembers, many chains were selling two for the same price.

Therefore, it may be wise to start saving and spreading the cost of Christmas over the next few months in order to avoid debt problems.
