Avoid holiday debt problems by getting a package deal

Avoid holiday debt problems by getting a package deal

- Thursday, 24 June 2010

Consumers are being warned against DIY holidays by the Association of Independent Travel Operators (AITO) as these do not offer as much financial protection as a package vacation.

Furthermore, consumers could get into debt problems if a flight they have booked themselves is cancelled due to a volcanic ash cloud as most airlines will not compensate for added holiday expenses accrued by the delay.

A spokesperson from AITO said: "The temptation to create DIY holidays, by booking flights and accommodation separately, does not offer the protection, in case something goes wrong, given by a packaged holiday bought from an AITO operator."

His comments follow the announcement by budget airline Ryanair, which has opened a new base at Malaga and will fly 44 different routes.

Ryanair will now operate 360 flights a week from the airport and encourage tourists back to Spain.

However, the spokesperson warned holidaymakers not to be tempted by cheaper flights as they are not necessarily protected from cancellations due to ash clouds.
