More than a third of holidaymakers risk losing money and getting into debt problems by falling for online scams when they book their trip away.

Experts from the government-backed internet security campaign Get Safe Online and the travel association ABTA are urging consumers to remain vigilant.

Those in a rush who do not check the credentials of the travel provider could risk getting into debt problems as fraudsters posing as holiday companies could steal their money.

Tony Neate, managing director of Get Safe Online, said: "In the worst cases, holidaymakers could be handing over their hard-earned cash for 'dream holidays' that do not exist."

Holidaymakers should check that the travel provider is accredited with a trade association such as ABTA before booking a trip, ensure the payment method is secure and trust their instincts.

Bob Atkinson, travel expert at Travelsueprmarket.com, recently said that anyone, even those on a modest income, can afford to go on holiday without getting into debt.
