Avoid rising hidden green tax on energy bills by shopping around

Avoid rising hidden green tax on energy bills by shopping around

- Wednesday, 30 June 2010

Compare and switch energy providers to avoid hidden green tax and reduce bills, suggests an expert.

An increase in energy bills could negatively affect those living with debt problems as they will have less money to spend on mortgage, loan or credit card repayments.

According to Mark Todd, director at energyhelpline.com, the hidden tax placed on energy bills by the government to subsidise green schemes is likely to increase, which will impact how much households pay for fuel.

He said: "Certainly there is up to somewhere between £50 and £100 of green taxes in a typical household bill. That comes from energy efficiency schemes from the government which are subsidised out of people's bills."

However, the best way to reduce energy bills is to look around, compare and switch to the cheapest provider, he said.

A new survey by uSwitch.com found that households currently pay about £84 a year on hidden green taxes.

This amount could double to £176 within the next ten years as the government faces pressure to combat climate change.ADNFCR-2300-ID-19865867-ADNFCR
