Bankruptcy advice 'has doubled in Maldon'

Bankruptcy advice 'has doubled in Maldon'

- Tuesday, 16 June 2009

Figures from Citizens Advice show the extent of debt management difficulties in Maldon, it has been revealed.

The Maldon and Burnham Standard reports the statistics, which show personal debt per client seen in the local Citizens Advice Bureau has risen from £27,000 to £40,000 over the past year.

Along with this is a growing number of people seeking advice about bankruptcy, with enquiries on the topic having doubled in the past 12 months.

Manager of the bureau Graham Sharp tells the publication: "We are seeing the impact of the recession on people's debt levels.

"And we are all too aware of how this can affect other parts of their lives," he adds, linking debt problems with depression, anxiety, stress and family problems.

Nationwide, figures from Citizens Advice show that debt management remains the primary reason why people approach their local bureau for guidance.

However, in 2008-09, a year-on-year increase of 24 per cent was also seen in the number of people asking for more information about bankruptcy proceedings.ADNFCR-2300-ID-19220387-ADNFCR
