Brits, including those with debt problems, may have been overcharged for energy
- Thursday, 7 April 2011Around three in ten UK adults, which may be seeking
debt advice, have been incorrectly billed by their energy company in the last two years.
That is according to a new report by price comparison site uSwitch.com, which found that 27 per cent of households have been billed wrongly.
It was also revealed that 40 per cent of households have found that they owe their energy company money due to a discrepancy between an estimated bill and a real bill.
This could lead these people into
debt problems if they find they unexpectedly owe a large sum of money that they cannot afford to pay.
Ann Robinson, director of consumer policy at the website, said: "Consumers should aim to provide a reading once a quarter - failure to do so can result in receiving an estimated bill, which is where many of the issues relating to accuracy lie.
"It is a simple step to take, but it really is in all of our interests to make sure that suppliers are using up-to-date information on our bills."
Citizen's Advice and EDF Energy have launched their Energy Best Deal service online. It gives consumers advice about dealing with energy debt and how to switch energy provider.
