Brits spend an average of £338 per week while on holiday

- Monday, 13 September 2010

UK holidaymakers spend an average of £338 per week while on holiday and they could get into debt problems if they use a credit card.

According to Tesco Travel Money, 56 per cent of males think they are in charge of the holiday finances and they tend to spend more than their partners.

Women spend around £310 a week while abroad compared to £368 spent by men.

The poll of 2,023 British adults also found that one in five spend more money than they had planned to while on holiday and a further 34 per cent said that they always take too much money.

John Howells, head of travel money at the supermarket, said: "With the average person spending £338 each week whilst away, it is essential people find the best deal to make your holiday money stretch a lot further."

Tourists could get into debt problems if they choose to use a credit card to fund their holiday as they may be charged for transactions made abroad.

However, credit card debt could be avoided if the consumer uses the new Sainsbury's Gold Card as they will be eligible for free travel insurance and interest free cash withdrawals overseas.
