Brits with debt problems may want to apply for free home insulation

- Thursday, 3 February 2011

Consumers, including those currently seeking debt help, who obtain their energy from British Gas may want to take advantage of the firm's new scheme.

British Gas announced that it will be offering either a free loft or cavity insulation to the first 200,000 customers who apply for it.

In this way, less energy will be wasted meaning that bills could be reduced, aiding those seeking debt solutions.

uSwitch.com has welcomed this move by the gas and electricity firm, as it recently found that around £52 has been added to an average household's annual bill.

Tom Lyon, energy expert at the price comparison site, stated that 14 million homes have gone without heating at some point this winter due to cost and that insulating an home can reduce the price of an energy bill.

However, if people miss out on British Gas's deal they can undertake other methods to make their homes energy efficient.

Mr Lyon said: "If they miss out, consumers can take other energy efficiency measures such as installing a standby saver or an energy monitor.

"Customers should also ensure that they are paying the lowest possible price for the energy they do use."
