Budgeting for Christmas could aid those with debt problems

Budgeting for Christmas could aid those with debt problems

- Thursday, 25 November 2010

Budgeting for Christmas and rethinking about the way you use your money may help those with debt problems avoid getting into further arrears.

According to Joanna Parsley, associate director of Credit Action, Christmas is always an expensive time of year and spending can escalate.

She recommended: "Write a list of all the items you will be buying and see where you can make savings.

"If you do need to borrow to fund the Christmas season, make sure you shop around for the best credit deal you can, and aim to pay down the debt as soon as possible."

Therefore, if someone does borrow using a credit card or loan they must ensure they can clear the debt quickly to avoid getting into debt problems.

Ms Parsley's comments follow research by moneysupermarket.com, which found that Christmas could push 3.8 million Brits into debt.

Of those who revealed they would be pushed into debt, 69 per cent stated they would make purchases on a credit card, 23 per cent would use their overdraft and eight percent would take out a loan.
