CAS reveals increase in need for debt advice
- Monday, 17 August 2009The number of people seeking
debt advice in Scotland has risen by 14 per cent over the past year.
That is according to Citizens Advice Scotland (CAS), which suggests that debt is the biggest concern among Scots turning to the institution for help.
Figures show that nearly a third of approximately one million cases fielded by the group in the last year were debt-related.
Kaliani Lyle, CAS chief executive, said that the institution's findings indicated a difficult future for the Scottish population.
She said: "The fall in income, the threat of redundancy, the spiralling debt, the disappearance of reasonable credit, the lack of affordable housing and the spectre of homelessness - many are suffering combinations of all of these things, and the result is often depression, illness, family or relationship breakdown."
People suffering
debt problems could consider speaking to a
debt advice specialist.
