CCCS welcomes MPs' report slamming government debt advice provision
- Thursday, 8 April 2010Following the publication of a Public Accounts Committee report lambasting governmental
debt solutions provision, a leading debt charity has reacted positively.
Welcoming the "frank report", the Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) said that it was important the government improved its services to help people
get out of debt.
"[This report] highlights the need for the Insolvency Service to carry out a comprehensive review of debt and its solutions to ensure they are effectively dealing with the UK's consumer
debt problem," said Malcolm Hurlston, chairman of the CCCS.
The report indicates that one in every ten Brits has
debt problems and consumers owe in excess of £1.5 trillion.
Moreover, it criticises the government for a lack of effective leadership on the issue.
Though the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills' programme of offering face to face
debt advice is praised, there are worries that increasing demand will overwhelm the service.
It is recommended that the private
debt help sector is expanded to cope with demand.
