Check your broadband download limit to avoid debt problems

Check your broadband download limit to avoid debt problems

- Wednesday, 22 December 2010

Consumers have been advised to check their download limits on their broadband packages this Christmas in order to avoid the need for debt help in the future.

Consumer Choices has warned that consumers planning to watch more TV online this Christmas could incur a hefty bill if they exceed their download limit.

People could struggle to pay this bill as Christmas is an expensive time of year and they may end up needing debt advice to help them cope.

In a survey of 1,000 consumers, 35 per cent of broadband users plan to watch more TV online over the festive season, while 18 per cent do not know what their download limit is and 28 per cent are unsure about how much they download each month.

Michael Phillips, product director at the firm, commented: "Christmas is already an expensive time of year, so the last thing consumers need is a hefty 'excess downloads' charge being added on to their broadband bill.

"Download penalties are an entirely avoidable expense and they can really add up, especially if you have more than one person using online TV services in your house."

Some of the highlights of the TV schedule this Christmas include a Doctor Who Christmas special on the big day itself and Upstairs, Downstairs on Boxing Day, reports the Telegraph.
