Children 'want to learn about debt management'

Children 'want to learn about debt management'

- Monday, 26 April 2010

Children would like to learn how to manage their finances, according to new research, something that could help them to avoid debt problems later in life.

Halifax interviewed 1,202 children across Britain aged eight to 15 and learned that over two-thirds want financial education and advice from their parents while 18 per cent would prefer it from school.

Financial education could decrease the chances of children needing debt help in the future, a popular belief as Mumsnet, a parenting website, and Martin Lewis, an expert from Moneysavingexpert, are petitioning the government to introduce it.

Flavia Palacios Umana, senior manager of Halifax savings products, said: "These skills, alongside an understanding of financial matters, will help them to more effectively manage their money and financial commitments now and in the future."

She added that if children get into a savings habit from a young age they will learn how to budget, possibly reducing the risks of debt problems.

The research also showed that 77 per cent of those asked wanted to learn more about savings, 24 per cent about credit cards and 13 per cent about mortgages.

The government wanted to introduce compulsory financial education in 2011 but the plan was scuppered earlier this month.ADNFCR-2300-ID-19741045-ADNFCR
