Citizens Advice produces leaflet to reduce risk of New Year debt problems

- Tuesday, 7 December 2010

The Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) has produced a leaflet in conjunction with Barclaycard to help consumers avoid debt problems in the New Year.

Consumers can pick up the leaflet to find out how to avoid overspending over the festive period, which may mean less people need debt help at the start of 2011.

Gillian Guy, chief executive of CAB, said: "Christmas is a time of giving and it's all too easy to overspend.

"There are enticing offers and pressures to buy and it can be tempting to ignore how much you are spending, but this may lead to problems in the New Year."

She also warned that January could be harder for many as people are not preparing for the increase in VAT.

According to a survey by the charity, 18 per cent of the population do not know what VAT stands for and a further 13 per cent are unaware of the rise.

In June, chancellor George Osborne announced that VAT would increase from 17.5 per cent to 20 per cent on January 4th.
