Clothes prices to increase eight per cent next year

Clothes prices to increase eight per cent next year

- Tuesday, 30 November 2010

Those living with debt problems may want to start shopping around for their clothes as prices are predicted to increase next year.

Next warned earlier this month that it will be increasing its prices by eight per cent next year due to a hike in worldwide cotton costs.

Consumers will be affected in the first quarter of 2011 by increasing food prices, while the clothes retailer has warned of further hikes from March.

Next has already revealed that its sales fell by 3.3 per cent in the third quarter of the year.

Simon Wolfson, chief executive of the store, said: "We're planning very conservatively for 2011 but not [for] a disaster."

Those with debt problems may find they have to cut back on clothes due to the increase in prices next year but they have options.

Consumers could shop online and follow the trends as the Next directory witnessed an increase of 7.9 per cent in the third quarter.

Gocompare.com recently found that consumers are already starting to cut back on non-essential spending on things such as takeaways and clothing.
