Confidence Code introduced to help consumers shop around for energy

Confidence Code introduced to help consumers shop around for energy

- Friday, 10 December 2010

Consumer Focus has introduced a Confidence Code, which will help Brits to switch energy company and possibly avoid getting into debt problems.

The Code is used to provide accreditation to price comparison sites so that consumers know that the best energy deals are being listed.

In this way they may feel more confident about switching as they know they will be getting a better and cheaper deal.

This in turn will mean they pay less for their energy, which could help them avoid getting into debt problems.

Switching energy provider could be particularly important at the moment as British Gas has hiked its gas and electricity prices by seven per cent today (December 10th), which will affect around eight million consumers.

Audrey Gallacher, head of energy at Consumer Focus, said: "Online price comparisons have been a tremendous innovation allowing consumers to compare deals in their own time and without pressure.

"However price comparison sites, and our code, have to reflect changes to the market to make sure consumers continue to benefit."

Some of the changes include sites will have to provide better information on limited term discounts and tariffs.
