Consumers could need financial help as ID fraud rises

Consumers could need financial help as ID fraud rises

- Wednesday, 7 October 2009

The number of UK residents requiring debt help could increase as a result of a recession-related rise in the levels of identity fraud.

According to Equifax, when the economy slows down, the frequency of identity theft increases as a result of a rise in the number of people struggling to cope.

Despite suggestions from CIFAS, the UK's fraud prevention service, that the public has been doing more to protect itself from fraudsters, warnings have been sounded for people to remain vigilant.

Neil Munroe, spokesperson for Equifax, said that people should be wary of anyone asking for confidential information, particularly with regards to emails.

He commented: "It is important that you look after and [are] aware of all the different places where your information can be [gotten] from and make sure that is secure.

"Certainly never [respond] to emails asking about information on bank accounts."

According to the organistion, 19,100 people have taken out CIFAS Protective Registration so far this year.
