Consumers increasingly concerned about credit card debt

- Friday, 3 December 2010

Concerns about credit card debt continue to dominate the main financial worries of consumers, a quarterly survey by R3 has found.

It was found that 47 per cent of consumers were concerned about their levels of credit card debt the most over the last quarter.

This was followed by those worried about how far they were into their overdrafts (28 per cent) and mortgage repayments (23 per cent). These have all increased since the third quarter.

Steven Law, president of the insolvency body, said: "I see many people who are concerned about their credit card debts as, worryingly, they rely on them for day-to-day purchases.

"Unfortunately, I fear that the number of people worrying about their levels of credit card debt is set to grow."

However, these concerns could be avoided especially over the Christmas period if families decide on how much they can afford and stick to a budget.

It is also important that they cut back on their credit over the festive period as they do not want to be left with large bills in the New Year, recommended David Rodger, managing director of the Debt Advice Foundation.
