Consumers taking UK holidays to avoid debt problems?

Consumers taking UK holidays to avoid debt problems?

- Tuesday, 11 May 2010

The growing popularity in staycations this year suggests that holiday makers are remaining cautious, perhaps to avoid debt problems in the future.

Travelsupermarket.com found that 27 per cent of the 1,000 people polled by the website had decided to holiday in the UK instead of travelling abroad this year.

Disruptions caused by the volcanic ash cloud to flights, a weak exchange rate and industrial action planned by British Airways means that British holiday makers are changing their plans with eight per cent using a ferry or the Eurostar rather than flying.

The cost for a holiday in the US has grown by 13 per cent this year with $1,000 costing £666.31, compared to £589.31 last year.

Duncan Barraclough, travel expert at travelsupermarket.com, said: "Money is still an important factor for many people. The recession may be officially over however many people are still cautious when it comes to parting with their hard earned cash."

Some consumers may be cautious to avoid debt problems.

One method to save money while planning a vacation is the Post Office Credit Card which allows customers to exchange their holiday money with no extra charges and does not charge for purchases made abroad.ADNFCR-2300-ID-19770894-ADNFCR
