Consumers urged to find a financial safety net rather than building up credit card debt

Consumers urged to find a financial safety net rather than building up credit card debt

- Wednesday, 2 February 2011

Relying on a credit card can lead to mounting debt problems if the holder has no other financial safety net.

Such is the opinion of Susan Barclay, head of marketing at Scottish Provident, who also advised consumers to consider getting personal protection insurance to cover them if the main breadwinner is unable to work.

She said: "Britons without any emergency savings who would rely solely on credit cards in a time of financial emergency would only be able to maintain their current standard of living for just five months, in addition to finding themselves in mounting personal debt."

Therefore, people who feel that they can only maintain their standard of living by using a credit card may like to seek debt advice to see how they can get back in control of their finances.

Those who have generated credit card debt could also look into the debt solutions available to them.

Ms Barclay made these comments after the Post Office revealed on January 31st that 11.5 million people turned to their credit cards to make everyday purchases in January.
