Consumers urged to rethink their Christmas budgets to help avoid debt problems

Consumers urged to rethink their Christmas budgets to help avoid debt problems

- Monday, 20 December 2010

A study by Bright Grey, released on December 18th, found that 11 per cent of adults could end up needing debt help as a result of their Christmas spending.

That is because around 5.5 million Brits will be spending more than they can afford this Christmas, which could lead to debt problems.

It was also found that consumers will increase their monthly outgoings by 65 per cent in order to fund the festive season.

However, the need for debt advice in the New Year could be avoided if consumers rethink their budgets this year.

Such is the opinion of Joanna Parsley, associate director of Credit Action, who also stated that costs at Christmas can quickly escalate.

She recommended: "Although Christmas is not far away, we would urge everyone to rethink Christmas - write a list of all the items you will be buying and see where you can make savings.

"If you do need to borrow money to fund the Christmas season, make sure you shop around for the best credit deal you can, and aim to pay down the debt as soon as possible."
