Couples planning their big day can avoid debt problems by negotiating a cheap wedding

Couples planning their big day can avoid debt problems by negotiating a cheap wedding

- Wednesday, 27 April 2011

Couples-to-be worried about needing debt advice in the future after paying for a wedding can ensure they avoid accruing debt problems by negotiating a cheap wedding.

Jasmine Birtles, founder of moneymagpie.com and financial journalist, stated that couples can save money by getting married on a weekday, as they will be able to get the same service and venue at a lower price as there will be less competition.

She said: "Don't mention the 'w' word when you're talking to suppliers. Particularly if you're going to have a reception and you want to have it in restaurant.

"Just tell them that it's a family party and not a wedding, because they actually put extra money on it for no real reason other than they know you'll pay it."

In this way, couples may be able to pay for the wedding themselves without resorting to borrowing money and therefore helping them to avoid needing debt solutions in later life.

A new book entitled Your Dream Wedding was released by moneymagpie.com on April 19th. It revealed that a couple telling businesses they are paying for a wedding can add an extra 25 per cent to the price.
