"Critical" pensioner poverty levels could cause rise in debt advice needs

"Critical" pensioner poverty levels could cause rise in debt advice needs

- Thursday, 30 July 2009

The level of pensioner poverty in Britain is to become an "increasingly critical" issue, according to Saga magazine.

Britain's ageing population coupled with the country's high level of pensioner poverty dramatically increases the likelihood of a number of pensioners requiring debt advice both now and in the future.

Saga magazine has suggested that the problem of pensioner poverty will continue to worsen until amendments to retirement legislation are made.

Emma Soames, editor of the magazine, said: "Unfortunately there is no quick fix for tackling pensioner poverty. It is going to become an increasingly critical issue as the number of those reaching pensionable age in the UK increases."

She added that Saga believed that the default retirement age should be abolished and that people should be afforded the opportunity to choose when they retire – provided they are healthy and able to do their job.

The default retirement age in the UK is up for review next year. ADNFCR-2300-ID-19290244-ADNFCR
