Culinary catastrophes add to debt management issues

Culinary catastrophes add to debt management issues

- Thursday, 14 May 2009

Britons' ability to manage debts could be hampered by their appetites, according to research from AA Insurance.

The insurer explains that the cost of "culinary clumsiness" amounts to £1.5 billion each year - a figure which could hold significant implications for the nation's debt management efforts.

Most of this, at 51.8 per cent of all kitchen-related disasters, is the breakage of glasses and crockery.

Around a third of expenses related to dining disasters arise from red wine spills, with 43 per cent coming from stains linked with dropped food.

Consumers' attempts to manage debts could be hit even harder for one in four would-be chefs whose culinary excursions end in fire.

Nine out of ten of those surveyed revealed that their attempts to save money by eating in actually cost them an average of £100 in broken china or damage to their homes.

Further expenditure could be necessary to replace bicycles as AA Insurance recently noted the theft of David Cameron's cycle could be the start of a summer crime wave.ADNFCR-2300-ID-19169194-ADNFCR
