Customers overcharged for energy could require debt advice

Customers overcharged for energy could require debt advice

- Thursday, 27 August 2009

UK debt advice needs could increase after recent figures revealed that a number of households are being overcharged for their energy.

According to research from Consumer Focus, some people are being overcharged despite a decrease of more than 50 per cent in the wholesale cost of electricity and gas.

Gary Felgate, chief executive of the Energy Retail Association, said that the current price differentials could be down to time, but that ultimately energy companies would have to be consumer conscious.

He commented: "There is always a time lag between when prices change on the wholesale market and when these feed through to domestic bills."

"However they have to operate in an environment where the price of energy, the demands of a low carbon economy, and the need for huge investment in infrastructure compete."

The Consumer Focus research suggests that current gases prices should be 7.4 per cent cheaper, with electricity prices an average of 3.1 per cent over the odds.
