'Cut back on credit' this Christmas to avoid debt problems

'Cut back on credit' this Christmas to avoid debt problems

- Tuesday, 30 November 2010

Families should cut back on credit this Christmas so that they do not risk getting into debt problems at the start of the New Year, suggests an expert.

That is according to David Rodger, managing director of the Debt Advice Foundation, who also stated that families should draw up shopping lists to help them budget.

He said: "It's very tempting for families to load up credit cards, store cards and overdrafts to create the 'perfect Christmas', but sadly the arrival of bills and mounting interest in the New Year soon takes the shine off the festive feeling."

Therefore, those living with debt problems should try to avoid accruing credit card debt, which they can achieve by budgeting.

Mr Rodger made these comments after the Family and Parenting Institute revealed on November 29th that families are planning to cut back on spending this Christmas.

It was found that 39 per cent of parents intend to spend less on Christmas presents for their loved ones this year and 35 per cent plan to spend less on food.
