Cuts to housing benefit could cause debt problems

Cuts to housing benefit could cause debt problems

- Friday, 10 September 2010

The proposed ten per cent housing benefit cut for those who have been claiming Jobseekers Allowance (JSA) for more than 12 months could lead to more people needing debt help.

Duncan Shrubsole, director of policy and external affairs at Crisis, the national charity for single homeless people, claims that the cuts in housing benefit will lead to an increase in homelessness.

He said: "People will have to go without food, and they are going to get more into debt [and] rent arrears.

"Eventually they become dependent and it costs more for the average taxpayer in the long run than it would to keep them in their current accommodation."

If consumers find themselves going without food and getting into rent arrears, they should seek debt advice in order to find a solution to their problems rather than running the risk of losing their homes.

Mr Shrubsole's concerns have been voiced following the release of statistics from the Trades Union Congress (TUC) on September 5th.

The TUC has stated that if the cuts go-ahead, 194,000 unemployed people will lose nearly £500 a year.
