Debt advice could increase with CBI proposals
Debt advice could increase with CBI proposals
- Tuesday, 22 September 2009The number of UK students seeking
debt advice could increase if recent recommendations from the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) are adhered to.
The CBI has suggested that the cap on fees should be increased to £5,000 - a move that would increase the annual income of universities by £1.25 billion by 2014.
University and College Union general secretary Sally Hunt has said that the timing of the CBI's proposal is wholly unsuitable and would only serve to cause more problems rather than solve them - particularly where student debt is concerned.
She commented: "Raising tuition fees and the interest rates of student loans is not the answer during a recession.
"The proposals in the CBI report offer absolutely nothing new and merely list the obvious ways to increase student debt".
It has been widely reported that approximately 170,000 students have begun the academic year without the funding to which they are entitled.
