Debt advice needs could rise among rural jobseekers

Debt advice needs could rise among rural jobseekers

- Friday, 10 July 2009

The unemployed in rural Britain have been more affected by the recession than their jobless counterparts in towns and cites.

According to the Local Government Association (LGA), the number of jobseekers in rural Britain has increased 287 per cent; a far greater rise than that of the country's urban areas.

Though there are still fewer applicants per job in rural areas than in built-up regions – one in six and one in nine respectively – the proportional rise in joblessness could increase the need for debt advice in such areas as a result of greater competition.

Councilor Margaret Eaton, chairperson of the LGA, said: "It is deeply worrying for rural areas that the outlook for jobseekers in the countryside has deteriorated at a quicker rate than in the cities.

"The very special needs of the rural economy must not be overlooked as the recession continues to bite and unemployment continues to rise."

The collapse of Woolworths had a large impact on unemployment in rural communities due it its presence in a number of smaller towns, the Daily Telegraph reports.

Unemployment currently stands at 2.26 million and is expected by many to reach three million next year.
