Debt help may be sought by those pulling a 'sickie'

Debt help may be sought by those pulling a 'sickie'

- Thursday, 21 January 2010

Debt management may help people avoid calling in sick at work because they are too cash-strapped to afford the travel costs.

New research by the Institute of Payroll Professionals (IPP) states that thousands of UK workers are expected to call in sick this week, as many are suffering financially due to the January wage stretch.

IPP chief executive Lindsay Melvin said the third week of January was foreseen as being one of the busiest times for people to pull "sickies".

This could be seen as a result of people simply choosing not to pay travel costs to and from the office.

"For the many workers who find it difficult to budget and overspent during the Christmas season, this week is going to be problematic," she said,

"In these cases, employees may find that they cannot afford to transport themselves to work."

January appears to be a testing month for many, with new research revealing that more than 12 million adults intend to use their credit card during the course of the month to fund the cost of daily living.ADNFCR-2300-ID-19569615-ADNFCR
