Debt help may reduce the levels of poverty in the UK
- Wednesday, 3 February 2010More can be done to reduce poverty and inequality in the UK, according to one organisation.
Poverty research manager at the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF), Chris Goulden, said a greater emphasis needs to be placed on shrinking the size of the UK's low-wage, low-skilled economy.
"The current focus of policy remains on getting as many people into work as possible, whilst providing some support in the benefits system, especially for families with children," he said.
"However, there needs to be more effort on ensuring jobs are well-paid and flexible and allow people to progress in their careers, with training that enables this."
As many households were facing continued pressure from the effects of the recession and the ongoing squeeze on disposable income, such issues will continue to be a problem, said Mr Goulden.
His comments were made after research by Shelter revealed that the lack of affordable housing is fracturing and isolating many UK families.
According to the study, 1.5 million adults claim they are unable to look after their elderly parents because they simply can't afford to live near them.
