Debt management could help people keep up with rent payments
Debt management could help people keep up with rent payments
- Monday, 6 July 2009The number of people falling behind with their rent has increased over the past six months, according to the Association of residential Letting Agents (ARLA).
ARLA figures show that 65 per cent of letting agents saw an increase in the number of tenants failing to pay their rent on time.
People struggling to cope with rent demands could potentially ease the financial strain of renting by seeking
debt advice.
A number of tenants have also tried haggling with their landlords over rent prices, with 93 per cent trying to negotiate a lower rate.
A large contribution to this trend has been the increase in the number of people struggling financially, particularly those without a job, according to charity Shelter.
Sam Younger, chief executive of Shelter, said: "As unemployment rises and the recession begins to bite, more and more people across the country are struggling with their housing costs."
A total of 730 letting agents were surveyed for the ARLA report.
