Debt management may be needed by speedsters

Debt management may be needed by speedsters

- Friday, 22 January 2010

Serial speeders could be needing debt management advice in order to help pay their increased insurance premiums.

New research by moneysupermarket.com has found that motorists convicted of speeding could be faced with paying almost double in insurance premiums.

The average amount paid in annual premiums for a 30-year-old male teacher in Manchester driving a 2006 Ford Focus is £545.86, according to the study.

This average figure increases to £623.15 with three points on the driver's licence, £773.82 with six points, and £958.25 after clocking up nine points.

Head of motor insurance at moneysupermarket.com Steve Sweeney said it was not surprising that insurers took a hard-line approach to driving convictions as speeding increased the risk of accidents.

"Although about a third of providers will not increase the premium for one blemish on your record, serial speeders will find fewer providers willing to insure them and at increased prices," he said.

According to Road Casualties Great Britain (RCGB), there were around 28,000 casualties in accidents in 2008 where a speed contributory factor was reported.

These included 586 fatalities and over 4,000 serious injuries, accounting for 25 per cent of road deaths and 18 per cent of serious injuries.ADNFCR-2300-ID-19572244-ADNFCR
