Debt management solution 'needed' in North Ayrshire

Debt management solution 'needed' in North Ayrshire

- Tuesday, 23 June 2009

A Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) in North Ayrshire is hoping to develop a debt management solution for the region with local councillors and MPs because of a "crisis" in the area.

The Irvine Herald reported that the bureau is reporting a "perfect storm" of debt problems in the region thanks to rising prices, falling incomes and less-available credit.

Nina Blakely, general manager for the North Ayrshire CAB, said that many people are going into debt "just to get by" - and then have to take on additional loans to pay the first ones off.

"Before they know it, they are hopelessly in debt and can't see a way out and yes, some local people have told us that they have chosen to forego meals or turn the heating down, in order to try and pay off their debts."

Debt charity Credit Action has listed a step-by-step guide for coming up with a debt management solution.

It advised that once people have admitted they need help managing their debts, they would be wise to seek free and independent financial advice about their options.ADNFCR-2300-ID-19231489-ADNFCR
