Debt problems are unique to the person so debt advice should be sought
- Monday, 31 January 2011Consumers dealing with
debt problems should seek
debt help unique to them as no two circumstances are the same.
Such is the opinion of David Rodger, managing director of the
Debt Advice Foundation, who also stated that every
debt problem is individual.
He made these comments after the Prudential revealed that 21 per cent of people will be in debt when they retire in 2011, with the average owned amounting to £33,100.
Mortgages and credit cards are the main cause of these
debt problems, with over half of those experiencing money worries owing money on both.
Mr Rodger said: "In the last five years we have seen an increase in people entering retirement with serious levels of unsecured debt.
"This is because we're beginning to see the first generation of credit card users reaching pension age."
The Prudential also found that one in 20 people will retire with debts amounting to over £50,000. This increases to one in ten for men aged over 65.
