Debt problems can be cleared if consumers 'stay in control'

Debt problems can be cleared if consumers 'stay in control'

- Friday, 1 April 2011

Brits can become debt-free if they take control of their situation and pay off the debt with the highest interest rate first.

Such is the opinion of Justin Modray, a spokesman for candidmoney.com, a financial website.

He said: "The priority is to get rid of the most expensive debt first, while also shifting debt to cheaper deals where possible.

"For example, if you're able to get a zero per cent introductory credit card deal then transferring the balance from a more expensive card will give you some breathing space."

However, he warned consumers to be careful of high interest rates on these cards, which start when the introductory deal ends.

That is because consumers could easily end up with debt problems if they continue to use the credit card to make purchases.

This advice could be useful for those aged over 50 who are worried about retiring with debt problems, as a recent report by Saga found that this age group faces higher rates of inflation than the rest of the nation.
