Debt problems cause students to leave Scottish universities
- Friday, 16 April 2010Scottish university students are more likely than those from the rest of the UK to drop-out during their first year because of financial hardship and
debt problems, claims the National Union of Students (NUS) Scotland.
The Higher Education Statistics Agency has released figures for university drop-outs during 2008/9 and found that 9.9 per cent of Scottish students discontinued their studies compared to 8.4 per cent in England.
In response to these statistics, Liam Burns, president of NUS Scotland, told the BBC that poverty was a factor as students did not have enough money to get by.
He said to the news provider: "Levels of student hardship and debt on the likes of credit cards and bank loans are through the roof... the poorest student in Scotland receives around £1,500 less a year than their counterparts in the rest of the UK."
There were 29,625 full-time entrants to Scottish universities including mature students last year.
