Debt problems could lead to relationship strain

Debt problems could lead to relationship strain

- Monday, 11 April 2011

Couples with money worries may want to seek debt advice as soon as possible, as financial woes can negatively impact on relationships.

Such is the suggestion of financial psychologist and founder of Taming the Pound Kim Stephenson.

He said: "Debt or money worries are the biggest reason for couples to consult [couples therapy].

"Debt or money worries usually rank third or higher in any ranking of reasons for people seeking treatment for depression or anxiety."

Debt problems could also lead to depression, Mr Stephenson added.

It may therefore be wise for couples to seek debt help before their situation worsens, as this can help them become debt-free.

According to data that was exclusively obtained by BBC News on April 7th, the current economic problems in the country may be leading to a surge in depression.

It was found that 41 million prescriptions for anti-depressants have been given out on the NHS in the past year alone.
