Debt services to continue despite faith in benefits?

The number of people requiring debt help could remain high despite a widespread believe that the state benefits system provides an adequate safety net for those that lose their job.

Research from Scottish Provident reveals that 35 per cent (16.5 million) of Britons believe the state provisions are sufficient.

The results from the High Wire Britain report show a significant increase on figures from five years previously when only 22 per cent of people felt the government provisions were good enough.

Despite this increase, head of marketing at Scottish Provident Susan Barclay said that the £5.76 increase in jobseekers allowance during those five intermediary years did not correspond with the rise in consumer confidence.

She commented: "The reality is that the average increase in jobseekers allowance of just under £6 doesn't come close to the cost of living in today's world.

"The government will continue to place greater emphasis on people providing for themselves."

According to the Office for national Statistics, there are currently 2.47 million people unemployed in the UK.
