Debt worries damaging health and relationships

Debt worries damaging health and relationships

- Friday, 19 February 2010

Debt management plans may help the 20.6 million adults who admit that their unhealthy attitudes to money are damaging their health and relationships.

New research from moneybasics.co.uk reveals that financial worries are a burden for 12 per cent of Britons, with the figure rising to 17 per cent among those aged 35 to 44.

Financial pressure is the cause of arguments and relationship breakdowns for around 500,000 people, according to the study, along with depression, stress, disrupted sleep, excessive drinking and comfort eating.

More than half of adults state they have financial concerns, with women more anxious than men, and those in the 25 to 34-year-old age group the most likely to be worried.

Chris Tapp, director of Credit Action, said the UK "desperately needs" to tackle its unhealthy attitude to money.

"Far too many of us have bad financial habits; we never check our bank balance when withdrawing money from an ATM, we don’t open bills and we don’t check our bank statements," he said.

A recent survey by research organisation Mintel found that money is the nation's top concern, with 40 per cent of Brits claiming to be stressed over their financial situation.ADNFCR-2300-ID-19625330-ADNFCR
