Dental work could lead people into seeking debt help

Dental work could lead people into seeking debt help

- Tuesday, 7 July 2009

The number of people getting themselves further into debt and subsequently requiring debt advice could rise as a result of borrowing in order to visit the dentist.

According to figures released by Sainsbury's Bank, the average size of a personal loan taken out solely for dental work is a staggering £6,492.

It is estimated that since the beginning of 2007, a total of £60.2 million has been borrowed to fund dental cosmetics.

In the four months from January to April this year, £3.2 million was loaned to fund dental surgery.

Steven Baillie, head of loans at Sainsbury's Bank said that people were taking out loans due to the expense of dental work mixed with the fact that many people do not have those types of funds readily available.

He said: "Some dental treatments can cost a lot more than many people have in readily available funds."

People's reliance on loans, particularly in the current economic climate, could result in the number of people requiring debt advice rising in the future.
