Downsizing could help older people become debt-free
Downsizing could help older people become debt-free
- Friday, 11 March 2011People who have carried
debt problems into retirement could consider selling their property and moving into a smaller home.
Such is the opinion of Dr Ros Altmann, director general of Saga, which focuses on the provision of services for those aged over 55.
She also stated that an increasing number of people aged over 50 have debts, which is worrying as they may find it harder to pay off when they are not working.
Dr Altmann gave this advice: "Pay off your debts as soon as you can, but don't leave yourself without any money.
"If you can downsize your property to release some capital that would make sense."
She also suggested seeking
debt advice as soon as possible, as a solution could be found to someone's money problems.
Aviva's fifth Real Retirement report for the first quarter of 2011 revealed that 23 per cent of those aged over 55 do not expect to be
debt-free until they are over 75, while a further 15 per cent claim they will never be able to repay what they owe.
