Elderly people with debt problems can get help reducing energy bills

Elderly people with debt problems can get help reducing energy bills

- Wednesday, 30 March 2011

Elderly people and the vulnerable, which may include those living with debt solutions, could take advantage of a new service being offered by uSwitch.com.

The price comparison site will be accepting energy bills from those who cannot get online, of which there are thought to be ten million in the UK.

Those who send their bills in will be advised about the cheapest energy deals that are available to them and told how they can save money on their bills, which may help those with debt problems.

It is thought that the elderly and vulnerable are the most likely to switch energy provider when they are approached by a doorstep seller and this may work out just as expensive as their current tariff.

Ann Robinson, director of consumer policy at the firm, said: "This may be the first time that many such households will have been given any real help and information about switching energy providers."

Those currently seeking debt advice may be reassured by a new Ofgem ruling, which will see energy companies notifying their customers of any increase in their prices 30 days before upping them.
